Why You Must Visit the Town of Hilton Head Island

Thank you to my wonderful hubby for snapping these photos during our visit to the island last year. Oh how I wish I still had this tan…

unique vacation spots in the us

I have traveled to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, in the United States 6 or 7 times now. To be honest, I’ve lost count. I love to travel. Call me irresponsible, but if I won one hundred million dollars right now it’s the first thing I’d do.

But it’s a rarity for me to have been to HHI (as it is referred to for short) more than once as I’m not one to travel to the same destination time and time again. I know some people love to travel this way. They find their go-to spot and visit 4 times a year (I legitimately once met a woman who had been at the resort we were staying at 43 times). I get it, it’s like ordering your favourite dish at a restaurant you frequent, you know you’re going to like it and leave satisfied.

So why is HHI the exception? Well, part of it is the company. I was first introduced to this magical place (which has got to be one of the top vacation spots in the United States) by my husband’s family. Back when we were still boyfriend and girlfriend I was invited along for the trip (I guess they knew I’d be sticking around, ha). We drove, as we usually do, from Ontario to South Carolina (previously from Toronto to Hilton Head, now from Kingston) and upon arriving I felt as if I had been let in on a well-kept secret. A tropical vacation spot in the U.S. that was actually driving distance from home!? I hadn’t seen anything akin to it without getting on a plane and heading south to the Caribean before.

This year, as we pack our bags, stuff the car like we’re a traveling circus, and embark on yet another drive down to Hilton Head, I thought it was about time I shared my reasons for visiting one of the top vacation spots in the United States over and over again.

Skip the Neon Signage

You may be using a lot of data on your phone as you’re glued to Google Maps to find just about anything, but that’s because businesses and their signs blend so harmoniously into the natural surroundings. There is not a single neon sign on the entire island. That’s right, no billboards, building-sized advertisements, or towering McDonald’s arches (don’t worry, there still is a Mickey D’s and all the other fast food you could ever want). There are strict restrictions on signage. They must be a certain size and colour scheme to ensure that they don’t disrupt the character of the island. So, most of what you see is smaller and neutral-coloured.

Now, why am I so excited about signs? Well, if you live in an urban area like me, this is noticeably different from every day life. The second we drove over the bridge and onto the island I was taken aback. Everything was green, lush, and beautifully landscaped. There’s just a peacefulness about it, as if you’ve traveled back to simpler times. Even though HHI has all the commercial conveniences most of us are used to, this seemingly inconsequential difference makes you feel as though you’ve left our consumerist society behind without having to sacrifice your double blended venti frappucino from Starbucks. It’s the best of both worlds.

Clear Water White Sandy Beaches

Ok, my husband may be unhappy with me for sharing this little tidbit with you, but I’m going to do it anyway to establish my point (sorry hubby). He’s a little squeamish when he can’t see the bottom of the ocean floor and won’t stay in the water long when he can’t be sure what’s lurking beneath.

But that’s not an issue in Hilton Head. The water in the summertime is warm and clear. There isn’t a rock in sight, and you won’t find your toes tangled in seaweed. Yes, there is the occasional jellyfish to be aware of, but the lifeguards on duty will post the risk of painfully bumping into one on any given day (and if you are stung, it’s not all that bad).

The sand is white, soft, and stretches on for farther than I’ve ever been able to go. The sheer size of these beaches makes their popularity bearable. No squabbling with strangers over the perfect spot here. The beach is absolutely massive, and if you’re traveling with little ones the ocean is perfect for a family swim. The water doesn’t get much deeper as it stretches on and pools of water develop on the sand later in the day.

In the evening you won’t want to miss the sunset on the beach in Hilton Head, but plan to stay until after nightfall for a chance to marvel at the stars. Just make sure you’ve got a sea-turtle friendly flashlight in tow as to not disrupt the wildlife. That’s one of the laws you should respect as a tourist, you can find a list of them here.

If you’re wondering how you can take advantage of one of the best beaches in the United States, you’ll be happy to hear that the entire thing is open to the public. Some access points are private, however, so you have to be staying at one of the beachfront resorts to use their entrance. Check out this FAQ for more info, or refer to this map.

Cycling the Island

I don’t ride my bike much (practically never) when I’m at home. But when I visit Lowcountry I become a riding enthusiast. Cycling is everywhere in HHI. There’s almost 60 miles/96 kilometers of trail on the island, which is a lot considering it’s not very big. You’re bound to see at least a few people riding their bikes as you drive around the area, but they’re not doing so on the road as is necessary in many communities. No, bike riding has been built into the infrastructure in a thoughtful way in Hilton Head.

The town has heavily invested in expanding the bike path network and has done so in a way that is both practical and picturesque. It’s just such a bike-friendly place, and the miniature stop signs along the path are cute (but they’re also legitimate so you should obey them). You can hop on your bike to grab some lunch or you can go for a ride with no planned destination, just to simply appreciate nature at its finest. You can also ride your bike on the coast while admiring the beautiful houses along the shore. I’d recommend doing so during low tide when the water has flattened the sand (making it easier to pedal) and there’s more space to ride. You can refer to this tide chart to plan accordingly.

Regardless of where you choose to cycle (and there are plenty of choices, check out a Hilton Head bike map here) you’ll have a hard time keeping your eyes on where you’re headed! Many of the paths are buried within the tall greenery, winding around stately tree trunks and over aligator-guarded waters (look, don’t feed). And although this bike network travels just about everywhere that vehicles do (as well as areas where cars can’t venture), you’ll feel very safe on two wheels regardless of your age. The paths are well delineated and distanced from the roads making it a great activity to do with kids in Hilton Head.

You can, of course, bring your own bike down to the island should you prefer, but there are quite a few bike rental companies on Hilton Head Island as it’s a popular option for many. Personally, my family has always rented bikes (we have enough stuff we’re lugging across the border to be bothered) and I would recommend this option. They’re usually waiting on the doorstep of our rental upon our arrival, in case you’d like to immediately trade in your four wheels for two.

Best Shopping Under the Sun

You didn’t think I’d travel somewhere without checking out the deals, did you? After visiting the area frequently I’ve pretty well narrowed down my go-to Hilton Head stores. Hilton Head shopping is great, and it’s one of my favourite things to do on the island, especially when I need a break from the sun or it’s raining. Some travelers may disagree with me and argue that Hilton Head shopping is nothing special. Maybe they’d rather be golfing, but not me.

Hear me out. I’m a Canadian girl who is used to things costing more amongst less selection. The stores in the States are double the size and the products are half the price. Even with the exchange rate being what it is, it’s still worth it. Hilton Head shopping is some of the best I do all year. These are the Hilton Head Island shops that I frequent and what I love about each of them.

Tanger Outlets

The Tanger Outlet Mall near Hilton Head Island is technically off the island but only by a few minutes. It’s worth the short drive as these outlet stores are some of the best shopping in the area. There are not one, but two Tanger outlet malls near Hilton Head, each consisting of lovely outdoor shopping areas and a great selection of stores. From designer choices such as Saks Fifth Avenue OFF 5TH and Michael Kors to more budget-friendly choices such as Aerie and H&M, you’ll find something that suits your fancy at the Hilton Head shopping outlets. The entire thing is outdoors, which is nice if you’d like to take advantage of the great weather but still prefer frequent air conditioning breaks.

Pro tips: There are lots of coupons you can peruse and access here by signing up, and if you’re a CAA/AAA member, you can visit the kiosks and grab your own coupon book for free (they’re otherwise available for $5). Keep in mind that many of these deals require you to spend a certain amount first, so it’s only worth it if you’re a dedicated shopper. Lastly, I would recommend consulting the map before getting started and choosing a few stores you really don’t want to miss out on. Shopping at the outlets can be tiring and you don’t want to waste any vacation time in stores that don’t excite you.

Coligny Plaza Shopping Center

This is where you’ll find Hilton Head souvenir shops and a more boutique selection of stores. The very pretty Coligny Plaza has been around a long time and it’s a well-known Hilton Head shopping area. The shops here are more expensive than your outlets of course, but the selection of products is unique and curated.

Wandering around is a great way to spend a few hours after you’ve had some lunch at one of the many restaurants located here. My favourites being Skillets Cafe & Grille as well as Frosty Frog Cafe, where you can choose a cold drink from their extensive daiquiri bar. You can actually buy pitchers of different flavors and take them home with you (so I hear anyway). My family and I have never bought multiple pitchers because we’re more responsible than that (cue the sarcasm, they’re delicious).

Pro Tips: If you’re looking for HHI branded gifts to take home and give to friends and family, Coligny consists of many Hilton Head beach shops that stock a range of choices. However, if you’re on a budget the Piggly Wiggly Grocery Store also has a lot of knickknacks, as well as beach toys, and a selection of local South Carolina food.

Big Box Stores

Like I said, as a Canadian girl hitting up the large home and clothing stores is an absolute must as you just can’t beat the prices and selection. I don’t leave Hilton Head without stopping into TJ Maxx, Marshalls, Big Lots, Hobby Lobby, Target, and Homegoods (some of these are technically off the island but going to and from is easy). I’ve also scored some amazing deals on items such as shoes and purses at department stores like Stein Mart and Belk.

Pro Tip: If like me, you’re not from the States and aren’t familiar with some of these stores, make sure you poke your head into a least one or two that you’ve never heard of just to scope it out. You may be pleasantly surprised! Last year I discovered a very cool and worldly store known as Cost Plus World Market, which my American friends may be familiar with but I had never heard about from Canadian shoppers. They carry super unique home decor sourced from around the planet and even some international food and drink. You know we’ll be back to check it out again this year.

Consignment Shops in Hilton Head

Obviously, as a fan of thrifting, I’ve checked out what’s available from the second-hand market on the island. Although there’s isn’t a ton of consignment options, there’s at least one you must visit. Chella D in Hilton Head is the cutest little vintage store. The ladies who run it are hilarious, warm, and lovely with a cultivated eye for style. Prices are affordable and the finds are rare. Each year I leave the store with at least one quality piece that I get excited about.

Pro Tip: If you see a consignment shop on the island, go in. I started doing this as of last year and decided that HHI just doesn’t do poor quality thrift. Everywhere I’ve ever popped into has a great selection and decent quality. Another shop you should definitely check out is My Sister’s Closet where you may stumble upon a special high-end find.

Have you visited HHI? If so, tell me what you love about it in the comments below since I’m sure we’ll continue to visit for the foreseeable future. I don’t doubt that there are lots of hidden gems I have yet to discover as every year the trip feels like it flies by even faster!

Follow along with our travels this year via Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter as we venture down for the first time as a family of three (a day and a half drive with an infant, now that should make things interesting).
